Projects in Digital Archives

August 25th, 2005

I present a draft syllabus for Projects in Digital Archives for comment and consideration. The fall semester at Pratt starts next week. We are shifting our attention from digitization to digital preservation this time. Students will work on a real-world website preservation project. Most of the readings are specs and standards, but we are reading The Social Life of Information to ground our thinking.

  1. Syllabus looks great! Maybe one of the objectives should include the ability to present a persuasive argument as to why we should bother with digital preservation to begin with? It can be a big undertaking and there are actually those who are completely unaware of the value (gasps all around).

(New blog is fabulous by the way)

  2. Good idea. I’ll add that to the assignment.

  3. I’m revamping my syllabus for a course I’ll be doing in the spring (managing digital assets) and have appreciated being able to look at your syllabus. You got interesting reading. I especially like the two related to “The Long Tail.” I remember when that article came out, but hadn’t considered making it something the students should read. (Now I have!)

I hope your semester is going well.
