Colophon

August 3rd, 2005

The Rogue Librarian runs on WordPress. The CSS layout for this design is based on Boredom by Topi Peltonen. The typeface in the masthead is JM Libris, and the tagline is set in Filosofia. The background art is taken from La Plante et ses Applications Ornementales, a selection of decoration and ornament compiled by Eugène Grasset as presented in the NYPL Digital Gallery.

Jeffrey and I had dinner with a web superstar who told us that we were both early bloggers. I had always though of myself as a Johnny-come-lately, but I was blogging by the end of 2000. The Wayback Machine has my first design which features my mother’s high school senior picture. She does not like the photograph, but I do. The CMS was one that I slapped together with ColdFusion and MS Access. I could not create something as cool and raw today. The garage band days of the web are gone, and the ensuing professionalism has taken some of the life out of what was once a punk rock medium. That was a lifetime ago.

  1. At least you had a CMS! I didn’t even have the foresight to do that. I just opened up a terminal window and used PICO to edit the files on the server–cleverly renaming my index page to something other than index whenever I’d felt that page had enough crap on it.

    Eeesh!

However, now that you’ve brought it up, I kind of miss that…

  2. Carrie! I didn’t know you’d redesigned. It’s lovely and it’s great to see new posts.

  3. What Erin said–it’s great to see you writing again. And the new look is gorgeous, too.

  4. the font for the body of your site is beautiful! could you share its name/origin with me?

  5. Jonah,

It is Georgia. That and Verdana were designed by Matthew Carter for Microsfot. They were commissioned to address the need for easy-to-read text on low resolution screens. Here is more about Georgia:

  6. Carrie, your new site is really calming and very beautiful, However, the spacing of the site is very open but I find that the title to entry to meta data (Posted in) are all the same distance from each other… so on a long list of posts there is a bit of difficulty in distinguishing each entry from one another.

    Again very lovely.

  7. I like the new design. I agree with you about the end of the punk rock days of the web…I also think this is a result of Google. Anyone can find you so you do have to watch what is attached to your name (unless you succeed in being totally anonymous). This theory, however, is refuted by a couple of librarian rockstars I know who have really elementary web presences. I guess the content really is more important!

  8. Hi Carrie,

Your site is truly lovely. I really like the background color for the whole site..what color is iit? It looks to me like some sort of off-white color..very relaxing.
