January 4th, 2002The photo page is now up to date. Greek art had never seemed particularly relevant; it was always beautiful, but removed from my experience. When I went to the Met last month, these grave steles packed an emotional punch that surprised me. 2001 was a year that betrayed too much about human fragility. The gravity and grace of these steles touched a chord, so I photographed them.
NYC freelancers, if you work in Silicon Alley, you may be eligible for somewhat affordable (about $250 per month), relatively decent health coverage. The Portable Benefits Network offers coverage to New Yorkers who have been working for at least the last three months in new media, web design or programming.
Author and illustrator Brian Collier was here today speaking to NYPL children’s librarians. Someone asked about his influences as an artist. His greatest influence, it turns out, is his grandmother who is a quilt maker.
Collier had grown up with family quilts, and the familiarity of the objects kept their importance from registering. After his first few books he went home and noticed the quilts anew. The forms and colors were much like those in his children’s book illustrations. If you have a chance to observe his original art and enjoy the texture, you will see the influence.
